How to protect your hearing at work

There are numerous dangers workers contend with at their jobs. Trips, lacerations and muscle strains are some of the most common, and employers are more likely to have protections in place against these injuries. However, far too many workplaces do not adequately protect workers against premature hearing loss from loud noises.

From industrial factories to construction sites, many workers have to deal with loud noises on an almost daily basis. If you are not careful, then these noises can impact your hearing. You may be able to file a workers’ comp claim, but prevention will help immensely. Fortunately, there are many ways to safeguard your hearing against these dangers.

Use earplugs when necessary

It should be up to your employer to provide ear protection if you will be around loud noises all day. However, it will not cost much for you to invest in ear muffs or ear plugs. For a work environment, you will need heavy-duty industrial earplugs to protect your hearing from the chronic sounds of industrial equipment.

Avoid putting anything inside your ear canal

If you use earplugs, then you want to make sure you do not misuse them and stick them too far inside your ears. Additionally, you do not want to clean the inside of your ears with Q-tips like so many people do. Many times, Q-tips end up pushing ear wax further inside the canal. You may also end up puncturing your eardrum, so avoid it at all costs.

Quit smoking

There are many health reasons to quit smoking, and here is one more. The chemicals in cigarettes will suffocate cells all over your body, and that includes cells within your ears. If you smoke often, then you should get your blood sugar levels checked frequently to make sure there are no imbalances. Always follow a doctor’s advice, which will always include giving up tobacco.
