Can I take action if I think I was exposed to toxins?

On Behalf of | Oct 11, 2018 | workers' compensation

Many workers in the United States are unfortunately exposed to toxins every day. In an attempt to prevent such exposure, there are many safety procedures in place that are enforced by law.

If you work in an environment that is at risk for toxic exposure or you believe that you may be at risk of toxic exposure, it is important that you understand your right to be safe. You should also make sure that you know how to take legal action if you do suffer as a result of toxic exposure.

Your right to knowledge and transparency

As a worker in an environment where toxic exposure is a risk, you have the right to learn more about the toxins present. You can do this by requesting “Material Safety Data Sheets” (MSDSs). These information sheets help employees to know the exact risks present in their workplace, and what procedures are in place to ensure safety.

Handling the presence of toxins

If there are toxins present in your workplace, you have the right to safety training and the appropriate safety equipment. Your employer should make sure that the toxins are managed and that risk of exposure is reduced.

If you believe that you have become exposed to a toxin at your workplace in the state of California, it is important that you seek medical attention immediately. In the aftermath, you should look into your workers’ compensation rights. This will be available to cover medical bills and any lost wages that you suffered as a result of the toxic exposure.
