Top tips for keeping a clean construction site

If you work in the construction industry, you’re well aware that keeping the job site clean is easier said than done. Even if you do your best to maintain a clean workspace, you never know what your co-workers, contractors and subcontractors will do.

A clean construction site is essential to your safety and well-being, so this isn’t something to put on the back burner. Here are three tips for keeping any construction site clean:

  • Don’t let the work pile up: The biggest mistake you can make is letting too much debris pile up, as this makes the job seem bigger than what it is. Fight against this with regularly scheduled cleanups.
  • Use trash cans and dumpsters: Many people neglect to clean up because they don’t know what to do with the debris. With access to both trash cans and dumpsters, there’s no guesswork as to where the debris should end up.
  • Hold others accountable: Don’t assume that everyone takes the same level of pride as you in regard to keeping a clean construction site. Ask others to help clean up, talk to them about why it’s important and report them if they don’t comply.

Since a debris-filled construction site increases the risk of an accident, you never want to get too far behind on your clean up.

If you suffer a construction site injury, such as one in which you trip on a tool or slip on a piece of debris, stop what you’re doing to receive medical attention.

Also, report the accident to your employer, follow the advice of your medical team and consider if you’re eligible for workers’ compensation benefits.
