Workers’ compensation benefits can provide supplemental support while you recover from an injury. However, using your benefits the wrong way could prevent you from maximizing their value.

Knowing how to optimize your benefits can make a difference in how sustainable they are for you.

1. Learn about your coverage

Your employer should provide an at-length explanation of your workers’ compensation benefits. This information should address what to do during an accident, where to seek help, how to report an injury, how to collect benefits and what your options are for maintaining your job during recovery. Reading this information in its entirety can help you prepare for the unexpected.

2. Report your injury immediately

Be prompt about when and how you report your workplace injury. According to the State of California, Department of Industrial Relations, failure to take action within 30 days of the incident could jeopardize your eligibility to receive benefits. Additionally, waiting too long could interfere with your memory of the events that led to your injury.

3. Communicate with your employer

Keep in touch with your employer throughout your recovery. Inform them of changes to your condition, as well as updates from your health care provider. Know your options for returning to work during your recovery in a lesser capacity.

Taking a proactive approach to securing and using your benefits can help you stretch their value. When used the right way, your benefits should sustain you until you have reasonably recovered and can safely return to the workplace.
